Hi, Audrey,

I am reading an article of the Economist. This is the link:

http://www.economist.com/news/sciencebrief/21660515-first-series-six-briefs-looking-unsolved-scientific-mysteries-we-ask-how

Reading the second last sentence of the first paragraph, I was baffled by  "the visible universe contains somewhere north of 150 billion galaxies". Why not just "the visible universe contains 150 billion galaxies"? I don't understand its meaning and grammar structure. Is it OK to say "to contain (a place) of (a number of things)"?

Looking forward to your reply. And I really appreciate your previous replies which did help me.

Happy Lunar New Year!

Hi, Audrey:
The following sentence puzzles me:

Hi E,

Yes, 'this' refers to their wedding night.  The author is adding drama to the scene by focusing on the special night of the two young newlyweds.  He is adding emphasis by saying, "this, their wedding night."  I looked up the book on Amazon.com and was able to read a majority of the first chapter.  Lots of drama and descriptions of the two young lovers.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Audrey

Hi, Audrey:
The following sentence puzzles me:

"They were young, educated, and both virgins on this, their wedding night, and they lived in a time when a conversation about sexual difficulties was plainly impossible."
(The first sentence of the first chapter of the book "The Chesil Beach" by Ian McEwan)

I don't understand the role of "on this". What does "this" refer to? Does "their wedding night" equal "this"? Why not just "on their wedding night"?

Please help me with it.
