Hello,

I am not sure what resources you have available to you in China, other than using the videos and lessons on the links123.com website.  I will ask my Chinese friends if they can direct me to better resources for you.

Thank you,

Audrey

Hello,

Thank you for your question.  The correct question would be number 1., Do you mind if I open the door?
This is correct because the verb 'open' is in the present tense, meaning it is happening now or about to happen.  In number 2, 'opened' means it is in the past tense, or that it has already happened.  If the door is opened, it has already happened.

Please let me know if this has helped you or if I can do anything else.

Hello Susan,
Thank you for your question and for participating in class.  It is an honor to have you watching.
Animals can bring great pleasure to people as pets, and also as they are observed in their natural habitats.  Domesticated animals, such as dogs and cats, are dependent on human beings for their welfare, and most of the time they are very happy doing so.  (We all know that some people are cruel masters, but most love their pets.)  Dogs and cats, left to themselves in nature, would turn wild and be a danger to people and other animals, since they would carry disease and vermin.  There would be unlimited breeding, which would weaken the species and the population of these animals would be out of control -- not a happy situation.  Then we as humans would be forced to eradicate all of these wild animals because of the danger.

Dogs naturally have a 'pack' mentality, which they happily transfer to their human families.  They enjoy living with humans, and some dogs assist their people with their work, such as hunting dogs and shepherds, and we cannot forget the personal assistance dogs used for special needs people like the blind or those with seizure disorders.  Animals who are loved and useful are very happy in their environments with humans and feel safe and secure.

Domesticated large animals such as cows and horses are also useful and mostly well cared for.  Horses are still used for work animals and also for pleasure animals for riding, and they also are cared for and protected.  These animals are content and safe.  We still have areas in the United States where wild horses and burros live in the wild.  These herds must be 'culled' frequently, as the inbreeding can weaken the herds and there is not always enough food in the wild to keep them nourished.  The captured animals are adopted by caring families who raise them in protected areas.

So as to your question about the animals owning their own life, they do not have control over their life, but when they are cared for by responsible human beings, they are content and safe, and generally live very long and happy lives.

Wild animals such as tigers, lions and elephants do own their lives if they are still in the wild, but they are in constant danger from predators (yes, even from man), disease and a shrinking environment, due to the expansion of people moving ever outward from cities.  We do have organizations of people trying to keep these animals safe, which is difficult because of unscrupulous people who will hunt where they should not.

I believe that it all comes down to people being responsible with the pets they own, and respectful of the animals who live in the wild.

I hope this has answered your question.
